We offer services to Care, Nursing & Residential Homes meeting current guidelines for handling medicines. We provide a wide range of Dosette Boxes, including blister pack, Venalink and Nomad.

As a responsible healthcare provider, we understand the high importance of Safe and Accurate Medicine Administration, whatever the size of the Care Home organization. It is also understood and recognised the time constraints facing the staff to provide care to their patients; which is why we commit to work in close partnership with Care Homes, establishing their individual needs and tailoring a complete support package to help the Care Home staff meet current guidelines for handling medicines. This is all done by providing safe, secure and efficient systems for administering medicines in order to help Care homes meet best practice to achieve Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements.

Expertise and Support: We work closely with Care Homes to help them choose a system that works for them, providing advice on every step; from storage and training assistance to support with ethical issues.

Dispensing Systems and Tools: There are many dispensing systems available, including a choice of Multi-Dose and Unit-Dose; as well as a traditional dispensing service to meet the needs of every Care Home.

Repeat Prescription Management (ordering medication process): We offer a script management service which ensures that every Care Home will have the correct medication available at the right time.

Receipt of Medication (monthly cycle): Medications for the monthly cycle will be available for collection or delivery no later than day 25 of the cycle to allow effective checking in and follow up of any queries. The delivery will be made on an agreed date and time window, and a written schedule will be provided. All medications will be delivered with a duplicate delivery note and any medication requiring special handling, such as fridge lines or Controlled Drugs, will be delivered separately accompanied by an individual delivery note.

Labelling of Medications: We take extreme attention and follow rigorous procedures to ensure maximum safety with medications. All medications will be dispensed and labelled in accordance with the Medicines Act 1968. Nutritional feeds will contain an individual label. Any item containing an inner container and outer box; i.e. creams/eye drops, etc; will be labelled on both forms of packaging. Date opened labels will be provided for use to identify when products with a limited shelf life were opened, i.e. eye drops. We will work with the Care Home and the prescriber to improve clarity and safety.

Medication Administration Records Sheets – MARs Charts: MARs Charts will be provided for all medications supplied to the Care Home, including monthly and acute items. The MARs Charts will contain a specific time of administration for each medication e.g. 08:00pm. All items dispensed; including dressings, appliances and nutritional feeds would be included on the MARs Charts; (separate MARs Charts for creams for carers use can be supplied).

  • PRN medication would be included on the MARs Charts without dose times to support the adherence to PRN protocols.
  • The MARs Charts have a carer’s notes section on the reverse, for nurses and carers to write any supporting notes e.g. cross-referencing. Blank MARs Charts will be supplied for emergency use, such as new admissions or hospital discharges.
  • Interim/Emergency Acute Prescriptions and Out Of Hours support are also available.
  • We will agree with the Care Home to a daily cut-off time for the supply of interim/acute/emergency prescriptions; this time will be no earlier than 6:30pm but may be later subject to local arrangements; all prescriptions submitted to the pharmacy by this time, providing that we have the item(s) in stock, will be delivered the same day.
  • We offer a 24 hours service for really urgent requests and deliveries. Pharmacist advice is also available 24 hours a day.
  • All items will be supplied with a printed MARs Charts and a Patient Information Leaflet.

Improving the Service to Care Homes: We conduct internal audits every 12 months and works with the Care Home Managers to agree actions and review the service provision.

Waste Management: We can arrange collection of all waste medications for Care Homes. Returns envelopes and books can be provided; as well as leave appropriate documentation with the Home to facilitate the audit trail. For Nursing or Dual Registered Homes, access to waste medication collection through a third party clinical waste collection company can also be provided.

If you wish to talk in private to the pharmacist on duty or to any of our helpful pharmacy staff, we can arrange this for you.

We understand that it can be embarrassing or difficult to talk to the pharmacy staff in front of other patients in the pharmacy about a personal health issue or medical condition; if you would prefer to discuss anything in the privacy of our Consultation Room, please feel welcome to ask a member of the pharmacy staff.

We offer our constant support for people with any disability by:
– Assessing medicine compliance needs of patients with disability.
– Providing reasonable adjustment or support.
– Providing alternative forms of labelling or reminder chart.
– Providing multi-compartment compliance aid when required.

We provide step-free wheelchair access and the staff will gladly help with access into the pharmacy.

We reserve the right to refuse or provide services to individuals who act in a violent, threatening or aggressive manner.

We dispense both NHS and private prescriptions and supply medicines and appliances.

We will give information and advice on how to get the most benefit from your medicines and appliances.

We keep a record of what we supply to our customers so when you bring in a prescription, our records tell us whether you may safely take a medicine with any others you may be taking. We label your medicines to remind you about precautions such as avoiding alcohol and not driving if you feel drowsy.

We keep a comprehensive stock of medicines and use fast and efficient wholesaler services to enable us to fill all prescriptions promptly.

Always keep medicines out of reach of children.

Some medicines may need to be kept in the fridge and others at room temperature. Our pharmacist is always available to advise you about the storage conditions for the medicines. Please ask in store for more details.

This service is especially useful for those taking more than one regular medication. We can prepare medicines, in a weekly Dosette Box – pillbox, to ensure they are able to utilise their medication correctly.

Healthcare plans that involve taking multiple medicines at different times of the day can get confusing at times. Some patients find it difficult to remember when to take each medication and how often. This can lead to forgetting to take some doses of medication or accidental overdoses when they forget that they have already taken their medicine dose. We can help you organise your healthcare plan, reducing the risks associated with getting confused, by providing your medications in a Dosette Box or Pill Box.

What is a Dosette Box?

Dosette Box Service

A Dosette Box is a disposable plastic tray that separates your medicines into individual compartments for different times of the day for each day of the week. Each box contains a full week’s medication labelled up with days and times to help you remember to take the correct medicines at the correct time of the day.

Advantages of a Dosette Box

When taking medicines, it is important to take them in the correct doses and at the correct times. This can be a cause of distress for those who struggle to remember medications or who find it confusing due to the amount of medications they are taking. A Dosette Box eases the stress of remembering to take your medicines at the right frequency and at the right time of day.

The clearly marked compartments on a Dosette Box help with making sure your medicines are taken correctly, making sure that your treatment plan is effective as possible. A Dosette Box can also take away the confusion of adjusting your medication when your doctor wants you to gradually change your dosage over a period of time. Your pharmacist will dispense the correct doses of medicine into each compartment. A Dosette Box is particularly helpful for patients with memory issues, but can also help any patient facing a complex treatment plan.

A Dosette Box is also a great help to those who are cared for by a team of people. The Dosette Box reduces the possibility of communication breakdowns, with each carer being able to see clearly which medications have been taken.

Emergency Hormonal Contraception, commonly known as the “morning-after pill” is available in our pharmacy, either with or without a prescription.

The emergency contraceptive pill is most effective if it is taken as soon as possible after you have had unprotected intercourse, but can be taken up to 72 hours afterwards; however, the sooner the better.

If you need emergency hormonal contraceptive advice you can speak with our Pharmacist, either in person or informally by phone. After a more formal but discreet and private consultation with our Pharmacist in our Consultation Room, if it is considered appropriate and safe, we can provide you with this form of contraception.

We will never ask you about the circumstances which have led to you seeking contraception advice but we will need to ask you some general medical questions to make sure emergency hormonal contraception is suitable for you to take.

Emergency hormonal contraception is extremely safe with no serious side effects and if it was to fail, and you become pregnant, it has not been shown to affect the pregnancy or harm the developing baby in any way.

We may be able to help if you need a prescription medicine in a genuine emergency when it is impossible to get to your doctor.

We offer Influenza – Flu Vaccination Service, both private and NHS funded.

The Flu Vaccination is available from October. This service is FREE if you are registered with a GP within our local area and fall within the following criteria:

– 65 years old and over
– Pregnant
– Have a serious medical condition (including diabetes, heart/chest/kidney conditions)
– Are living in a long-stay residential care home or another long-stay care facility (not including prisons, young offender institutions or university halls of residence)
– Are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill
– A frontline health or social care worker

The pharmacist on duty and our trained assistants are available for advice on all medicines and minor ailments as well as on appropriate use of non-prescription medicines, in private if required, within the privacy of our consultation room.

We can also give you advice on how to live a healthy life; for example, advice on how to stop smoking and maintaining a healthy diet.

We can direct you to other sources of advice and assistance if we cannot help you ourselves.

All medicines are dispensed in child-resistant containers unless you request us not to.

Making the most of your medicines

Most of us will take medicines at some point in our lives. For some of us, this may be for a short period (days, months or a few years); for others, medicines may be needed for the rest of our lives. Medicines can be used to stop us getting ill, help us stay healthy, control our conditions or cure an illness. But using them sometimes isn’t easy.

You need to:
– Take them at the right times and in the right way
– Look out for side effects or for signs that you aren’t getting any better (or getting worse)
– If you need medicines regularly make sure you always have enough of your medicines.

This can take time and commitment especially if you are taking many different medicines. Understanding what your medicines are for, how they work, when and how to take them and why they should be taken as prescribed can help to make sure you get the best results from medicines.

When you or someone you care for is prescribed a medicine here are some questions that you might want to ask your doctor, pharmacist, nurse or other health professional.

Questions to ask about your medicines:

1- What am I taking this medicine for?
2- Does this new prescription mean I should stop taking any other medicines?
3- How and when should I take my medicine?
4- How long should I take my medicine for?
5- When will it start working? How can I tell if it’s working?
6- Are there any foods, drinks, or other medicines to avoid while I’m taking this medicine?
7- What are the potential side-effects? What should I do if I think I have a side-effect?
8- What should I do if I miss a dose?
9- How do I get more of this medicine if it runs out?
10- Who should I talk to if I want any further help when taking this medicine?

If you have any questions speak to your health professional. Especially if:

– you are thinking about stopping a medicine, or are not taking a medicine you have been prescribed
– for any reason, you are finding it difficult to take a medicine as it was prescribed
– you are worried or concerned about side effects that you may be experiencing

It may also help to find out more about the condition that you have and if there is anything that you can do to help stay well.

What can you expect?

Your doctor, pharmacist, nurse or other health professional should work in partnership with you and:

– Help you to understand your medicines (what they do, how to use them) so that you can make decisions about your treatment. This may mean choosing a different medicine or treatment if it suits you better.
– Discuss with you your experiences of taking or not taking medicines, your views about what medicines mean to you and how medicines affect your daily life.
– Look for ways for you to get, take or use your medicines that fit in with your daily life.
– If you have any problems with your medicines help you to find solutions that you find acceptable.
– Jointly agree with you the desired outcomes from treatment, when a review of your condition will take place and if any monitoring is needed before and during treatment.

I have a tremor caused by one of my medicines. To help control this, I was prescribed another medicine three times a day. I found it was very difficult to take the dose in the middle of the day. The combination of my work schedule and finding a suitable place to take the tablet meant that I often missed the dose. I struggled with this for years until finally I was prescribed the tablet as a slow-release version that I now take once in the morning.” (By a patient with bipolar disorder)

– Patient Groups may have help-lines, resources and local groups that can support you.
– If you have any queries about medicines and are unable to talk directly to a healthcare professional, you can dial the NHS 111 number for advice.
– Every medicine should come with an information leaflet. It often contains a lot of information but may answer specific questions that you have. If you have a question about a specific medicine, the pharmaceutical company may have an information service that you can contact.

We are pleased to offer patients free Medicines Use Review (MURs) or Medi-Check.

This service involves a confidential discussion about your medicines with the pharmacist and aims to help you get the most out of your medicines. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to find out more about your medication and discuss any issues or problems. This service is conducted in our private consultation room.

Please note that this review differs from the one done by the GP; the GP will assess and change medicines whereas the pharmacist will discuss the best way of taking them.

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service available in our pharmacy that can help you to get the most out of your newly prescribed medicine.

Its aim is to provide you with the support you need to understand your condition and to explain how taking your new medicine can help you manage your symptoms.

When you are prescribed a medicine to treat a long-term condition for the first time, the pharmacist will support you to use the medicine safely and to best effect.

Our pharmacist will talk to you approximately two weeks after you first receive the medicine to see how you are getting on with it and to discuss any problems you may have. A second follow-up will be a month after you first receive the medicine. The service is only available to people using certain medicines. Our pharmacist will give you details and offer this free NHS service if this is available to you.

Who is the service for?

This service is for customers prescribed with new medicines, who may find it difficult to understand when and how to take them properly. This includes those taking medicines for:

– Asthma
– Lung conditions, such as COPD, chronic bronchitis and emphysema
– Type 2 Diabetes
– High blood pressure
– Conditions where you take a medicine to control the way your blood clots (anticoagulants or antiplatelet medication)

Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP)

The way the NHS provides prescriptions to patients is changing, patients can have their prescriptions created and sent electronically directly from their GP to their ‘nominated’ pharmacy where they wish to receive their medications and/or appliances from. There is a transition period where both paper and electronic versions are created simultaneously so that the systems that handle the ETP versions have time to settle in and become the single standard means of issue.

We are asking our customers to sign a Nomination Form that will allow our pharmacy to obtain their Electronic Prescriptions from their surgery, in accordance with the NHS Electronic Prescription Service.

ONLINE NOMINATION FORM

Patients will normally be asked to nominate just one pharmacy for their prescriptions to be sent to and dispensed rather than a variety of pharmacies.

Our pharmacy is already equipped with computers and systems that are capable of handling Electronic Prescriptions.NHS Electronic Prescription Service When visiting a pharmacy or your surgery, look out for the symbol shown in the image displayed here, which identifies where the NHS Electronic Prescription Service is being used.

We offer FREE PRESCRIPTION COLLECTION AND DELIVERY SERVICE.

All you need to do is Nominate our pharmacy as authorised to order your medication on contact from yourself or your representative and to collect your prescription from your surgery. You may also allow us to keep your repeat slip to order your medication automatically at the required interval and collect your prescription from your surgery, either in person or by means of electronic transfer.

We can supply you with a range of Nicotine Replacement Therapy (Nicotine Patches, Nicotine Chewing Gum, Nicotine Nasal Spray, Nicotine Lozenges, Nicotine Inhalator) or Champix.

This happens regardless of the calories required by each individual. Lipotrim is, therefore, an excellent diet choice whether you are highly active or sedentary.
– You are not living on a reduced amount of calories, just changing the source of calories. You will feel comfortable, healthy and ultimately in control.
– You should aim to consume a minimum of 2 to 4 litres of water, plus optional black tea and black coffee only.
– If you are compliant on Lipotrim you can expect to lose approx. 1 stone per month (females) and 1.5 stone per month (males).

Lipotrim Maintenance Programme

The Lipotrim maintenance programme is primarily designed to help manage long term weight maintenance. You may use the maintenance formula foods to supplement a normal healthy diet or after following the Lipotrim total food replacement programme; it can also be used to aid weight loss in its own right.

The Lipotrim Maintenance Programme allows a choice of the degree to which body weight is controlled. Using the maintenance formula foods for weight loss is, therefore, suited to those with less of a weight problem waiting to start or thinking of using the total food replacement programme; it is also suitable for those unable to adhere to a total restriction of food intake.

If there is a serious problem with food, -food addiction or simply more than a couple of stone to lose-, it is highly recommended to use the Total Food Replacement Programme.

By using a maintenance formula food at mealtimes, the portion size and number of calories consumed can be vastly reduced. Ideally, when losing weight, the amount of conventional food consumed at each mealtime, just after or with the maintenance food, should be restricted to about 100 calories.

The maintenance foods, although highly nutritious, vary in their nutritional composition. It is recommended that either the Summer Fruit drink mix or the Chocolate flavoured whip mix, with their higher protein level, is consumed as part of the daily intake if using the programme to lose weight.
